St. Malachy School is made up of 190 students in grades PK-8.  Our school is 1:1 with devices for all K-8 students. St. Malachy is located in Creston, Iowa approx. 1 hour from the Des Moines area.

Job Description

Full Time – Teacher Assistant

GENERAL FUNCTION

This position is to assist the PK classroom teacher in teaching children in an environment where Catholic values and teachings are the mainstream each day.  Providing a good foundation for early childhood education in accordance with each student’s ability. To establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1.      Education:  Minimum requirements are graduation from high school or GED.
  2.      Credential:  Requires a Child Development Associate (CDA) or Para Generalist Certification + Early Childhood concentration.
  3.      Experience:  Experience working with young children preferred but not necessary for hiring.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Works with the teacher in planning and implementing a program of instruction that adheres to the school’s philosophy, goals and objectives.
  • Works with the teacher in making purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies and maximize time on task.
  • Works with teacher in planning and implementing a program of study designed to meet individual needs of students.
  • Works with the teacher in creating a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Works with teacher in encouraging student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.
  • Works with the teacher in providing authentic observations.
  • Works with teacher in evaluating student accomplishment on a regular basis.
  • Works with teacher in recognizing learning and behavioral problems and makes referrals as appropriate alongside the teacher.
  • Works with the teacher in developing, in accordance with school guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Shares responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.
  • Continues professional growth through attendance at workshops and other professional development opportunities.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, committees and other activities as requested by administration.
  • Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, state and federal laws.
  • Performs any other tasks or duties deemed necessary by administration.

Physical Requirements to Fulfill Essential Functions of this Job

  • Teacher assistant must be able to see, hear, and respond to the needs of children and emergencies or conflicts that might occur in the classroom, on the playground, and in common areas. The classroom and school is a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the Teacher Assistant will have to supervise all children at all times.
  • Teacher assistant must feel confident that they can care for up to 10 children alone and can handle the stress, tension, and exasperation of daily contact with children, parents, and staff members. Sufficient vision and hearing to allow for supervision and interaction with students. Able to lift children up to 50 pounds from the floor to waist high ten to fifteen times a day; to crouch to a child’s height and maintain eye contact at a child’s level; to sit on the floor; to stand tall enough to reach children on play equipment; to stand or sit for long periods of time. Must be able to stand for four hours and/or sit for four hours at a time. Must be able to sit on the floor or in child sized furniture. Must be able to clean and maintain equipment and facility. Must be able to proactively take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff and themselves when coming in contact with children who are ill and/or contagious. Need to be able to identify smells associated with toileting and children who are ill.
