READY, SET, GO!

It was a beautiful day for a run!  Students in grades PK-8 took turns running laps at our annual PTO  Lap-a-thon fundraiser.  Volunteers helped keep track of the laps students ran by marking laps on a paper safety-pinned to their back.  Some students were very competitive! We will announce the winners of the Lap-a-thon very soon!

Mrs. Bailey and 6 FFA members came to second grade this week to talk with students about agriculture and careers in agriculture.  Students had a book read to them and practiced being soil scientists.

3rd grade students hosted a Biography Bash this week.  Students had to create a project that represented the person they were studying. Students in the large group picture are holding their “bottle buddy” projects.  Students learned about Rosa Parks, John Cena, Buzz Aldrin and many more!

Singing at the Y

St. Malachy students attended the YMCA National Day of Prayer breakfast this morning.  The sang two songs at the event and enjoyed a yummy breakfast.  It was an honor to have St. Malachy invited to this event.

What an exciting week at St. Malachy.  We returned from Spring Break and hit the ground running!

Congratulations to Tucker in 5th grade.  Tucker received 2nd place at the state level in the Fire Prevention Poster Contest.

Mrs. Burg invited Brad Edwards from Channel 5 news to join us on Wednesday to talk about severe weather.

Haley (7th), Bridget (6th), Ella (6th) & Brenton (6th) attended the Lenox Honor Band on March 25th.

Our 8th grade students experienced a day of segregation.  We had the red group and the green group.  Our red group experienced multiple restrictions throughout the day including how the used the water fountain.  This was an eye-opening experience for all of the students.  Students participated in the activity created by Miss Steinkamp in order to prepare their minds for reading “To Kill a Mocking Bird”.

Our Lenten Angels spent time this week discussing Holy Week and the order of events in Jesus’ final days.

This week our teachers prepared their hearts for Lent.  Teachers wrote down words on an egg that spoke to them about servant leadership.

Create in me a clean heart, O God.

A big thank you to everyone who attended Donuts with Dads this morning!  We had over 200 people in attendance!  What a great turn-out!
Recently, Kindergarten and Preschool paired up to learn about other cultures. They even got to dress in the native clothing!
A few weeks ago Jeff Mostek donated some new tables to our school.  This week Jan Lesan, our new PE teacher found a way to utilize these tables for class.  With the help of the older students, she was able to turn these into ping-pong tables!  What a great way to get more from our generous donation!
Students enjoyed our Valentine’s Day celebrations this week!  Here are few pictures from the Kindergarten party.
Tonight!
6pm
Come hear about our new online tuition program we will be using next year.  Chris from FACTS tuition will be coming to share information.

The Bishop is coming!  Again!

The Bishop has selected St. Malachy as his first ever Facebook live event!

It is an honor to have the Bishop come again and include St. Malachy students and teachers in his live event!

Please watch for more information.  We will go live February 23rd!

A Big Congratulations to Haley Simmons!

She was 1 of 15 students selected in the state of Iowa to be on the STEM Youth Advisory Board.

The two functions of this STEM Youth Board are to:

*Provide youth perspective to the STEM Council for guiding policy and programs;

*Communicate to peers and communities the programs and policies of the STEM Council.

Terms will be two years each with the opportunity for renewal. The Board will be chaired by Kwizera Imani, an Aerospace Engineering undergraduate at Iowa State University and member of the STEM Council.

Wednesday Mass will be hosted by 3rd Grade

A donut and coffee reception will follow immediately after Mass 3rd grade parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend.

We have lots of illness going around at St. Malachy.  It is imperative that families follow our illness policy to help cut down on a number of sick children.

*  ILLNESS

In the event a child becomes ill at school, he/she will be cared for to the best of our ability until the parent/guardian can be contacted.  No child will be sent home alone when ill unless the parent is contacted and gives such approval.

Returning to school after an illness:  The Center for Disease Control recommends that people with influenza – like illness remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100 F), diarrhea, vomiting, severe cough/cold, or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications (Tylenol, etc.)

All St. Malachy families should consider applying for CTO.  This is a great organization that helps families afford Catholic School Tuition.

2/9/17

Students are settling back down into a regular schedule after all the excitement of last week.

Mr. Kissell, our third grade student teacher,  spent time teaching our students about the shape of the Earth through food models.

In first grade, Mrs. Levine’s students spent time working with math manipulatives.  Once they completed their hands-on activity they moved to the ST Math software
on their class Chromebooks.

Mrs. Levine’s class also received a very nice thank you card from a gentleman in Minnesota.  PK-2 students visited multiple nursing home facilities last week and a student from Mrs. Levine’s class made a lasting impression with one of the nursing home residents.  She was so excited to have a visitor that she told her son in Minnesota all about it the special visit.  He felt it was very important that our students know how special their visit was to his mother.

I had the joy of teaching the 8th grade students how to sew during art this week!  It was so fun!

A Big Congratulations to the following students!

Marshall (3rd), Keely (6th) Patrick (6th) & Rylie (8th)

These students competed at the Knights Hoops Shoot Districts competition and will be moving on to Regionals!
